We learned about German nutcrackers when we hosted an exchange student from near Dresden, Germany. That is in the Erzgebirge country so he was very familiar with them. His family had a collection of nutcrackers and smokers which were an important part of their holiday celebrations.
Ebay has made it relatively easy to collect a variety of nutcrackers and the purpose of this website is to use what we have learned about them to help others identify their nutcrackers and help determine a value for them.
We will do this in two ways.
- We will be photographing some of our collection to show how they are made, how to distinguish genuine old nutcrackers from recent Chinese imports, and how to repair some of the common problems.
- We will set up pages for the major categories of German nutcrackers and pre-program them to display items that match the right criteria. That way visitors will quickly be able to zero in on items that match theirs.
Once you know approximately what you have you can follow auctions for the most similar items and see what they sell for. If you like you can print out the completed auction details, including pictures, and use that for insurance purposes and/or as the basis for your own sales.
